Portfolio Reflection For The Final

Our group for the final project consisted of Kristina, Thomas, Ashley, and me. When we first chose the project, we decided to base it on Antigone only because we were only getting two points of view from the text; Creon’s and Antigone’s. The minor characters had interesting points of view that we believed would be enjoyable to explore. We then chose a blog because it seems as if the blogs would be able to give a personal window into the characters mindset. In addition to this, the blogs would also allow us to comment on one another’s thoughts, so the combination of the minor characters points of view and their blogs would be an interesting focal point for our final project.
The character that I chose was Ismene. It seemed as though, when reading the text, I merely overlooked her and was more interested in Antigone’s thoughts. In addition to this, her life seemed so sad. Her family was killed and her sister cared more for her dead relatives than for the one that was alive.
My first three blogs revolved around the text. The first blog was centered on the conversation that Ismene had with Antigone. In this blog, Ismene is indecisive because she wants to help her brother, but she doesn’t want to be killed in the process. She lets Antigone do what she wants only because, I believe, she was frustrated with her. This then led into the second blog where Creon is sentencing Antigone to death. Ismene realizes that she doesn’t want to lose her sister as well, and tries her best to help Antigone. Antigone doesn’t want her help, and Ismene is left to mourn her loss of her family. This then leads into the third blog that focused on how Ismene felt about losing her family.
My fourth blog focused on what I thought Ismene would do after Antigone’s death. I don’t think she would kill herself, only because her entire family had somehow killed themselves or one another. I think she would have run away to get away from the memories and Creon. My last blogs were memorials for Antigone, Eteocles, and Polyneices. They served to expand on her feelings towards her family. My final blog was aimed at Creon and demonstrated what Ismene thought about him. I think that at this point, Ismene would have been more vocal about her thoughts rather than keeping them to herself.
My favorite part of the project was creating Ismene’s playlist. I think that music is an essential part to people. Basically, I put songs on the list that I thought related the most to Ismene’s character. Mostly, they were songs about pain and getting hurt, which is essentially what happened to Ismene. I thought that “Broken,” by Seether and Amy Lee related the most to Ismene. The song is all about being alone and the feelings behind that, which is perfect for Ismene. The other songs also focus on this subject. The most interesting song though, is, “Quiet As A Mouse,” by Margot and The Nuclear So and So’s. It’s all about discovering oneself, which is what Ismene is going to have to go through is she ever hopes to recover from this experience. The most difficult portion of the project was the group part of the project. It seemed as if we never really could agree on anything, and when we did, we didn’t have enough time. We did have one group meeting after setting up our blogs to discuss how we were going to present it. Overall though, I had fun working with the group. I also discovered that Ismene is much more complex than what the text shows us. Through this project, I was able to get in Ismene’s head and understand some of the decisions she made. So in the end, I really enjoyed this final.
